제목	男, 앉아서 소변 보는 게 남자답지 못하다?

얼마 전 방송된 TV 토크쇼에서 한 외국인이 ‘앉아서 소변보기’가 독일 남성들에게는 일반적 문화라고 말해 화제가 된 적이 있다. 이에 대부분의 남자 출연자들이 “앉아서 소변을 보면 내 몸에 튀지 않느냐”며 문화적 차이에 당혹스러워했다.

그러나 남성들이 좌변기에 배뇨할 때 소변 튀김 현상이 나타나 좌변기 주변이 오염되고 악취가 나 여성에게 ‘불쾌감’을 주며 소변이 손이나 속옷에 묻는 등 ‘비위생적’라는 전문가들의 지적이다.

실제로 앉아서 소변을 보면 이런 일을 막을 수 있어 노르웨이 등 일부 선진국에서는 남성 입식 소변기를 없앨 만큼 이미 문화로 정착됐으며 최근 발표된 설문조사에 따르면 국내 남성들의 47% 가량이 가끔 혹은 거의 좌변기에서 앉아서 소변을 본다고 응답해 이는 국내에서도 드문 일은 아닌 것으로 보인다.

◇ 생식기 차이에 따른 구조적 이유? 문화적 관습?남성과 여성은 아주 오래전부터 소변을 보는 방식이 달랐을까. 이에 대해 일부 학자들은 문화에 따라 달라진 것이라고 설명한다.

실제로 헤로도토스의 역사서를 보면 ‘이집트인은 남자는 앉아서 소변을 보고 여자는 서서 소변을 본다’는 대목이 나온다.

이를 근거로 이전에 남성들은 소변을 볼 때 서서보는 게 아니라 앉아서 볼일을 보는 게 일반적이었을 것이라고 추측하기도 하는 것.

이에 대해 경희대학교 여성학 강사 김연숙 씨는 “서서 소변 보는 것을 남성의 상징으로 여기는 이유는 전통적으로 남성의 성기를 과시용으로 생각하는 문화가 반영된 어릴 때의 배변 교육이 원인일 수도 있다”고 밝혔다.

또한 “여아의 경우 노출을 꺼리고 기저귀를 채우는 등 조심스럽게 배변 훈련을 진행하는 한편 남아의 경우 공개적인 공간에서 요구르트나 음료수 병에 배뇨하게 한다”며 “성인이 된 후에도 여성은 밀폐된 공간에서 소변을 봐야하고 남성은 개방적인 공간에서 서서 소변을 보게 되는 것“이라고 설명했다.

◇ 앉아서 소변보면 뭐가 좋을까?그렇다면 앉아서 소변보는 것이 남성 건강에 어떤 영향을 미칠까.

화순 전남대병원 비뇨기과 오경진 교수는 “의학적으로는 보통 남성이 앉아서 소변을 보든 서서 보든 별 차이 없지만 배뇨기능에 문제가 있는 남성의 경우에는 완전하게 끝까지 보기 위한 습관을 들여야한다”며 앉아서 소변 누는 것을 추천했다.

오 교수는 “앉아서 소변을보는 것이 배에 압력을 증가시키기 때문에 잔뇨감이 심한 경우나 절박뇨 등의 경우 서서 소변을 누는 것보다 잔뇨 배출에 효과적일 것”이라고 강조했다.

또한 오 교수는 “남성이 앉아서 소변 보는 것은 남성들만의 문제가 아니며 여성 고려 차원에서 진행돼야 한다”고 말했다.

즉 남성이 서서 소변을 본다면 남성과 여성이 함께 좌변기를 사용할 경우 여성에게도 영향을 미칠 것이라는 전문가의 의견이다.

최근 국내 한 비데업체가 10대 이상 남녀 네티즌 487명(남 311명, 여 176명)을 대상으로 실시한 설문조사 결과, 여성의 80.3％가 ‘남성도 앉아서 소변을 보기를 원하는 것’으로 나타났다.

여성 답변자들은 그 이유로 '소변이 밖으로 튀어 화장실이 냄새나고 불쾌해서'가 68.8%로 가장 많았고 ▲화장실에 갈 때마다 남자들이 서서 일을 볼 때 올린 변좌를 내려야 하는 게 불편해서 16.3% ▲청소에 대한 부담감 11.4%, ▲서서 소변을 본 후 가끔 물을 안 내리고 나올 때가 있어서 등이 1.63%를 차지했다.

실제로 일본의 기타사토환경과학센터가 발표한 연구자료에 따르면 일반 가정의 좌변기에서 서서 오줌을 눌 때 소변이 어느 정도 튀는지를 측정한 결과 바닥은 변기의 바로 앞부터 반경 40㎝, 벽은 바닥에서부터 30㎝ 높이까지 튀는 것으로 나타났다.

이와 함께 일본의 한 생활용품 업체의 실험에서는 남자가 일곱번 오줌을 누면(하루 평균 소변량에 해당) 약 2300방울이 변기 바깥으로 튀었고 직경 2㎖ 이하의 눈에 보이지 않는 안개 형태의 것까지 있는 것으로 드러났다.

한양대학교 구리병원 비뇨기과 문홍상 교수는 앉아서 소변을 눌 경우 높이 차이에 의해 서서 소변을 눌 때 보다 좌변기에 튀는 양이 줄어들 것으로 예상하고 “‘소변튀김’ 현상 등으로 인해 여성들이 불쾌감을 느낄 수 있기 때문에 여성을 배려하기 위한 남성들의 좌변기 사용도 나쁘지 않다”고 말했다.

산부인과의사회 고광덕 회장은 소변 속 ‘세균’에 의한 것은 아니지만 “남성 소변에 세면발이 등과 같은 미생물이 존재하거나 곰팡이와 같은 바이러스의 경우 여성에게 이완될 가능성도 없지 않다”고 밝혔다.

또한 고 회장은 “악취를 방지하고 여성들에게 쾌적한 느낌을 선사한다는 생각으로 앉아서 소변 보는 것에 대해 생각해볼 것”을 제시했다.
